What to Look for in a LCD Projector

Resolution

Every LCD projector is categorized by the pixels per inch of the projected images, which define how sharp the image will look. The most common classifications are SVGA (800 by 600) and XGA (1024 by 768). Keep in mind the display resolution of the computer or laptop you plan on using with the projector. If you currently have a SVGA, how long before you expect to upgrade to XGA or higher? This can be an important question if you plan to upgrade your PC or laptop soon. What looks great on your high-resolution computer screen will not have the same impact if presented through a low-resolution projector.

Brightness

Brightness is measured in lumens, and projectors may offer anywhere from 500 to 6000 lumens or more of brightness. How dark does the room have to be in order to properly see the images you're projecting? Will your audience require some light for taking notes? The maximum image size for a projector should be provided in the manufacturer's specs for both a darkened room and for moderate lighting. Also note the largest audience, screen, and/or room size you'll use and how often your meetings run that large.

Portability

Projectors come light anywhere from 5 to 20 pounds or more. Hard cases are available, usually for an extra charge, which allow the units to be checked as luggage when traveling. Is your new projector going to be set up in a single room or will it be carted across the country? If your projector does hit the road, do users plan on shipping it or bringing it on an airplane? If it is brought on an airplane, will it be carried on or checked as baggage? If your projector will not be traveling, but a permanent fixture in your office, will it be kept on an AV cart? All of these questions are necessary to help you determine the size and weight requirements for your projector.

Warranty

Each manufacturer has their own warranty. If you will be traveling from city to city you will want to ask whether the manufacturer has a projector-replacement service and how the program works. Besides offering a free replacement for a certain amount of time, many manufacturers offer a two-or three-year parts-and labor-warranty on the entire unit, except the lamp.
